Cell Goes To Test This Year

The likely PS3 CPU candidate gets ready for its beta version.

June 20, 2003 - Recent comments by Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi reveal that the Cell processor, believed by many as a likely candidate for inclusion in the Play Station 3, is nearing completion. Kutaragi comments to Bloomberg, "Development is progressing smoothly, and we should be able to provide a trial system within the year."

It can be assumed that Kutaragi is referring to some point before March of 2004 when stating "within the year." Keep in mind, though, that as the Cell is intended for use in a variety of applications, this report isn't to be taken to mean that we'll get our first look at the PS3 hardware this year.
